I don't even recall it taking me all that long to complete it's just taken me all that time to get round to blocking it. How embarrassing!

I wanted to knit Echo Wood mostly to use up a skein of yarn I'd originally bought for the Dreamscape shawl MKAL back in 2018. That called for 3 different shades of sock yarn and I had ended up ordering 4 because I couldn't pick online and needed to see the yarns in person. I ended up with this skein of Knit Picks Hawthorne Speckle Handpaint in City Lights leftover and I loved it and really wanted to use it.
I paired it with some random black 4ply I bought on a cone about 15 years ago, I thought that the black would be perfect matched with the black speckle in the Knit Picks yarn and frankly I am hoping to use up the last of the black yarn, it is never ending!
The knitting of this was pretty straightforward as far as I remember and blocking was ridiculously easy, making me feel even more ridiculous about leaving it so long. It really just needed wetting and smoothing into shape so I don't know what I'd been waiting for. After blocking I then left weaving the ends in for over a week rather than just getting on and completing it. I have been fairly busy with home working, home educating and sewing scrubs for the local hospital though so I won't beat myself up about that too much.
So it's finally done and I'm glad to have it in my collcetion, it's lovely and squish and warm and it looks really cool. I love the acid yellow against the black and the cable detail around the edge. Mostly I'm just happy to say it's finally done, mark it complete and move on to the next project without the nagging guilt of a project abandoned!
We all know I love a good mystery knit, in particular a Boo Knits mystery knit and the first one this year, Love is... started on Valentines Day. This one was actually announced at the end of last year and I'd mostly forgotten about it so I was unable to get any of the gradient yarns that were produced for the knit along. I'm really happy with the yarn I ended up getting, so no regrets there, but I'd recommend checking out the project gallery on Ravelry because there are some absolutely beautiful gradients on display there.

I decided to check out Natural Born Dyers Lorbanerry yarn, which was also recommended for this shawl and I ended up picking out a lovely soft pink which seemed like a perfect choice for a Valentines themed knit. When it arrived I was honestly over the moon with this yarn. It is so soft and shimmery and was a really lovely colour with subtle variances.
For beads I wanted something soft looking to give the finished item a romantic look. This pattern requires around 1300 beads so I didn't want to pick anything too experimental because that would be a disaster on such a heavily beaded shawl. I ended up choosing these grey AB Toho beads which I thought would contrast just ever so slightly without really standing out and just bring the right amount of sparkle. When they arrived I was worried that they were too dark, and all together in the tube they do look very dark, but individually on the shawl they are perfect.
Knitting this shawl was pretty straightforward, there were 6 clues each of which felt pretty manageable. I enjoyed knitting it and after each clue I was relieved that I liked the way it was looking. This shawl is a really good size and for the first time with one of these MKALs I very nearly used up all of my yarn. I'm a slightly tighter knitter so very often I end up with a slightly smaller shawl and a bunch of yarn left over but this one turned out just right.
Blocking was a bit of an arse because we redecorated out bedroom earlier this year and my clocking mats and pins are....somewhere? I had to do this one on a blanket with some highly unsuitable pins but the job got done and I'm happy with the result.
All in all I'm really pleased with this one and I can't wait to wear it outside. Currently I'm mostly wearing sweatpants and jumpers so lacy shawls look a bit mad but one day I shall look put together once again and this shawl will be perfect come that day!
Goodness aren't we living in interesting times? I'm currently on my second full week of working from home. It's all been a bit of a shock, obviously I was expecting it at some point but I left work one day, fully expecting to be going in the next day only to be told a couple of hours later that I would be WFH for the forseeable. I'd already been issued a laptop, just in case, so I was good to go but it felt weird having not saying a bit of a mental "goodbye" to the place when I left.
Luckily I'd made an effort to spruce up out dining room/craft room/dumping ground a few weeks previously so I actually have somewhere nice to work. I'd thrown out a load of stuff, moved everything around and changed all of the furniture to optimise the space available and got it so I was really happy with it. Things have needed to be shuffled about a bit so I could get to work, but it's a nice environment to be in and honestly things could be worse.
My dining table is doing duty as my desk and cutting table. I like that I have to clear away my laptop at the end of the day to use the table, it feels like 'going home' and just leaving work for the day. I've had to squeeze the printer in between my cute little cases of craft supplies. I need to find a better home for that though because it's really not the look I was going for! The printer is going nineteen to the dozen at the moment though, printing homework and colouring sheets so it will have to stay there for the time being.
My sewing machine desk is also being used as a desk for homework. This was not in the plan but the kids like the wheelie stool and I'm done arguing about it!

So here we are and for how long who can tell? I've been getting plenty of time for making things, not having to do the school run and travel to and from work is saving me around 3 hours a day! I blocked a shawl yesterday and will be weaving in ends and photographing that later. I've got another shawl to be blocked (when I remember where I put it!) and another to finish the final row and block so I have plenty to share. I hope everyone is healthy and safe and I'll be back soon with some actual knitting content.Hanrahanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13998561131162202878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3646663724027743783.post-55339719902317648892019-03-19T16:00:00.000+00:002019-03-19T16:00:14.876+00:00FO Frost on Roses

Once I’d finished Cassie’s Little Trees hat I felt like I
was done with hats for just a little while.
I was going to work on the baby blanket for my forthcoming niece/nephew
for a bit before maybe casting on a Boo Knits shawl. Felicity had other ideas and demanded that I
immediately make her a hat just like Cassie’s but purple and with open flowers
instead of trees. Who was I to deny such
an incredibly specific request for knitwear!
After a bit of searching I showed her a picture of Frost on
Roses by Katrin Schubert and asked her if that was open flowery enough for her
and once she understood that I didn’t have to make it in the same colours as in
the picture she agreed that it would be fine.
She was also happy with King Cole Panache DK (but it's a very fine DK so more like a sport weight) in soft grey and purple, which was lucky
because that’s pretty much all I had in the right weight! The colours don’t contrast much leading to a
really pretty subtle effect which is just perfect for Felicity.

I’m pleased to report that I didn’t have anywhere near the
difficulties I had with Cassie’s Little Trees and this knitted up quickly and
easily. It took me a few rows to kind of
see and understand how the patterns were coming together but once I’d got one
repeat under my belt I got a feel for it and I could read my knitting better
and see easily if I was going wrong.

Once finished I was a
little worried because the crown decreases left the hat with a kind of tricorner look
to them as it was all a bit pointy but after a light blocking that almost
disappeared and disappears completely once the hat is stretched over the head. Felicity insisted on having a bobble on the
top which obscures the crown a little but not entirely. After much deliberation and consideration of
my bobble stash (we all have one of those right?) she settled on a pink one
which I duly sewed on. 2 days later she
decided it was awful and went back into the stash and picked a white one
instead. Obviously this was rather
annoying but the kid obviously had a very clear vision for this hat and if I’m
putting in the effort to make her something I have no problem making sure it’s
exactly what she wants.

After being a pink sort of girl for many many years Cassie announced recently that she was now super into red and all her things must now be red. She was needing a new winter coat so we got her a lovely red one and I thought it would be lovely to make her a hat to match it.

Cassie’s choice was to have a hat just like my Little Trees hat but red so I bought some Drops Lima in red and navy blue and got knitting. Given that I have recently knitted this pattern I thought I’d get this knitted up in a couple of days. After trying my hat on Cassie and using the scientific technique of pulling in tighter round her head I decided to do 2 less pattern repeats each round to make it fit a 6 year old. I also made the ribbing at the brim shorter so the hat wasn’t too long.

All was going well until I’d completed about 2/3 of the hat and then I made a mistake, tried to unknit it and something went awry and I had no idea how to fix it. I can usually work out what’s gone wrong and work out some sort of fix but this one was beyond me so I ripped the whole thing out. I figured it’s just a little hat so no big deal. The second time I had to rip was just a few rows in, the third time about half way through and at that point I started to get really annoyed! Thankfully that was the last time I had to fully rip out but I kept on making little mistakes that meant I needed to unknit a couple of rows here and there and the whole thing really just took far longer then it needed to.

Eventually I got to the end and it was totally worth it, this hat is so cute. I did think that maybe I wouldn’t need to do as many pattern repeats as the pattern specifies but shortening the brim ribbing was enough to stop the hat being too long and I’m pleased that I cast on the right amount of stitches to make this fit Cassie snugly. I let her pick her own pompom which is why that colour combo is a wee bit bonkers, but it’s her hat so who am I to judge! I bought these pompoms a while ago before I discovered the one that come with poppers attached so sewing this one on was a bit of a bugger. It has a small elastic loop attached which I sewed to the hat but the bobble wobbled around something awful and the last thing you want is a wobbly bobble so I had to anchor it at several points around the base to get it on there more firmly.

So finally it is done, she hasn’t worn this properly yet because it has been really warm but the temperatures do seem to be dropping a bit again so hopefully it will see some wear before it goes away for the summer. Oh yes and the tooth is gone, it took a minor blow to the mouth while she was playing at the park to get it out but it was more than ready so it wasn’t too much of a drama. The pattern I chose this time was Briochebubbles Hat by Raina K, I liked this one because it is a bit different and is very visually striking. I particularly liked her orange and blue version but I couldn’t find both an orange and a blue that I liked in the same yarn so I went with orange and purple which does the same job as far as I’m concerned. The yarn I used for this was King Cole Luxury Merino DK and in all honesty I’m not entirely into it, it’s a bit finer than I expected and quite limp so this hat isn’t quite as warm as Little Trees. It’s good to have hats for not quite so cold days though and given how long this hat turned out this limpness of the yarn is probably a good thing because I wouldn’t really want it to stand straight up! Luckily brioche knitting is very stretchy and I have a tiny head so I didn't need to worry that the hat wouldn't fit even though the yarn is a bit thin.

According to the pattern once you have completed the completing the repeating part the first time you should repeat it once more and then do the first few rows a third time. I read this, I understood it and then my brain logged it as ‘repeat the whole thing twice more’. So one I’d done that, realised my mistake and carried on regardless adding those first few rows again and then the crown decrease section, this hat is looooong! I added a fur bobble to weigh it down so it doesn’t stick straight up and make me look like a gnome and honestly I’m not mad at it, it’s a good hat. It did what it wanted to do and I like it even though I do feel a bit of an idiot for not double checking the pattern.

After all of the shawl knitting I have been doing recently I’ve been taking a bit of a break in order to knit some headgear. I’ve got some hats in the works but because my daughters are required to wear their hair up for school I’ve found that hats are not always that practical for them. After one particular day when Cassie insisted on jamming her Foxy Hat on her head over a high ponytail and wondered why her ears weren’t covered I figured I should probably knit her a headband instead. Oh and one for Felicity too. Incidentally this is Cassie when I knitted her Foxy hat:

The hat is 5 years old and miraculously at nearly 7 it does actually still fit her when her hair is down. Seeing as she still loves and wants to wear this hat I was excited to find a pattern for a fox headband and cowl set. I don’t really see myself knitting the cowl element although it is pretty flipping cute. The headband though is exactly what I was after.

These were really quick to knit with a simple seed stitch strip, knit flat and joined and the ears and bow made separately and sewn on. I actually knit the girls headbands last year, simple navy ones to match their school uniform. They were also seed stitch but knit in the round and they hardly ever wear them because they are a little large and don’t stay on well. I much preferred that these were knit flat as I could keep trying them around the kids heads so that they fit perfectly. I used a provisional cast on and joined the ends with a 3 needle bind off rather than seeming because personal preference and then sewed the ears on where I thought they should go rather than following the directions because my bands were a little shorter than the measurements given in the pattern (tiny heads run in the family!). I used DROPS Lima and some scraps of white something or other from the stash for the inside ear bits. Apparently the yarn is a little itchy on their ears but they have been wearing them without complaining so it can’t be that bad!

Both girls are really pleased with these, they love wearing them to school and I love that their hair isn’t all messed up when they get there in the morning. I will be making them a hat each soon too because some days it is so cold that a hat is definitely needed but for the rest of the time these headbands are just the ticket.

So now we are just waiting for the other one to drop out, at the moment it's sort of hanging to one side so it looks like she has one central tooth poking out between her lips. I feel that this project did carry a slightly higher element of risk given that it involved choosing a number of colours without knowing how they would be combined and I can certainly say that I would have chosen completely different colours had I seen the pattern first. Despite really liking the colour combo that I picked, somehow the end result is not me at all. I would have preferred it if I’d chosen all shades of one colour with the difference in shades being very slight for a much more subtle effect. Of course now I know that there is absolutely nothing stopping me knitting another and choosing the exact colour scheme that I want and I may very well do that at some point.

I hope everyone is keeping warm wherever you are. We were forecast snow during the night, along with a lot of the UK, and although I know i did snow a bit it turned to rain and we woke up to a very drab grey day with persistent rain. It is however very cold and going outside is just the worst. So to brighten up an otherwise drab day I thought I would share some very pretty yarn that I received a couple of weeks ago.

Shortly after new year I received the very exciting news that I was one of the lucky prize winners from the 2018 Boo Knits Challenge. I was pretty shocked because I actually won a prize last year so I did not expect another one at all. There were prizes for the 3 knitters who completed the most items in the year, I did not win one of those prizes seeing there were people who knit more than 30! Then there were 11 prizes to be drawn from all of the other knitters who completed the challenge. We knew what each of the 11 prizes were but at that point didn’t know who had won what. A few days after I was contacted by Sabine from Lichtfaden asking me which of 3 beautiful skeins of her Meridian Lace I would like to choose. Honestly I couldn’t believe my luck! I’ve used Meridian Lace once before to knit my Just Be You and it is just lovely. It’s a total splurge though so I was very grateful to be getting my hands on some more.

I was able to choose between a beautiful one of a kind red skein, a skein of Mother of Pearl and one of Peacock Feathers. They were all tempting but I knitted a red silk shawl last year and I haven’t really worn it so I’m not sure another would fit in to my wardrobe. The Mother of Pearl was very hard to resist but very special and not really for everyday wear so I went for the Peacock Feathers which is also beautiful but somehow more wearable in my own wardrobe. Once it arrived I knew I’d made the right choice, just look at it!

It had been delivered to the local Royal Mail office so I picked it up on the way to work and opened it there. At least two of my colleagues remarked how it looked just like a peacock before they even saw the shade name on the label. Another colleague has made me promise that she can have it if I die before knitting it up! So now I just need to pick a pattern and choose the right beads for it because I really want to knit with this as soon as possible and then maybe it can help me on my way to completing this year’s Boo Challenge.

So I'd hoped to bring you this post last week. Clue 7 arrived on Monday when I had a couple of rows of Clue 6 left to do and it turned out that Clue 7 was just the bind off so I was hoping to have it done in a flash. Of course that was when I caught a godawful pestilence that has been doing the rounds here and pretty much didn't knit a stitch for several days. Has anyone else had a horrible cold? I wouldn't say it was quite as bad as flu but it was getting there and even now I'm recovering I feel all weak and pathetic and just.....wrong I guess. Luckily I was expecting it as so many people around me were ill and I knew it was going to be bad so I wasn't surprised by how awful I felt, but still, ugh.

Anyway I've recovered enough to finish the last 2 clues and get this shawl off the needles. Clue 6 featured a series of increases which help to form the points as well as 2 row stripes. I completely failed to notice until it was far too late that the penultimate stripe was supposed to be in colour B instead of colour D. A bit of a whoops there but I decided that it really wasn't going to bother me enough to warrant unknitting a row and and a half so it stays.
Clue 7 was just the bind off and we were given the choice of doing a picot bind off or substituting a stretchy bind off of our choice. Now had I been knitting along as soon as the clue released I would have gone for the picot bind off. I don't particularly enjoy working them and I find that they can look a little fussy for me at times, but I like the way they look on some shawls and I'd have given it a go on this one. As I'd fallen behind however I was able to check out some of the finished shawls and decided that in this case I did prefer the simpler edge so that's what I did.
Well we're getting there, Clue 5 is done so there are only 2 clues to go 😀 This clue was a fun one! It started with another row of purl, yarn over, purl into a knit 3 together which is tedious but looks really pretty but the rest of the clue was very enjoyable to knit. It consisted of slipping sets of stitches and leaving the yarn floats in front and the catching up the floats a few rows later to make little triangles.
I've used a similar technique before to add little butterfly motifs to a pair of socks so this was fairly simple.
Small tangent: At this point I disappeared off to Ravelry to see if I had a picture of said socks, I did (obviously!) and WOW I knit these 10 years ago, seriously it's like I blink these days and a year goes by! I still have these socks, they have a few holes in and are starting to look a bit tatty but now I realise that the reason for this is because they are older than my children.
So yeah. This clue took a few days due to the rows getting longer, but it was fun and I like the way it looks. The next clue introduces the 5th colour that I haven't used yet so I'm looking forward to getting going on that one.
The only think worth mentioning is that I was supposed to switch down a needle size for this clue and I failed to notice this piece of information until I was at least halfway though. There was no way I was ripping back for that so it stays the way it is. I will however be paying slightly more attention to the needle sizes in further clues now that I know it is not entirely predictable!

Please don't groan, this is another post about a two colour brioche hat. You know the drill, I make a lovely hat, I enjoy making it, it doesn't fit right and I give it to someone it looks great on. Not this time! I'll go right ahead and say this hat is awesome, fits just the way I want it and I now need at least 3 more of these in my life. Boom!

The pattern I used this time was Little Trees by Raina K, this pattern is not described as slouchy but I figure that this time I would pay attention to the length of the hat and knit a little extra height so that it could fall down a bit at the back and give me the extra head volume I need to not look weird. I'm aware that I'm starting to sound a bit bonkers about hats and the size of my head but let's just put it down to one of those little foibles that everyone has and move along.

In the end this hat turned out to be plenty tall enough without adding any extra height and I really love the shape of it on me. This was another enjoyable knit and I'm really happy with the colours I chose. I used DROPS Lima once again, this time in Cerise and Ice Blue. I popped a fur pompom on the top because I am done making my own pompoms but I do enjoy a bobble on my hats so I now have a stash of furry ones to choose from. This pattern is slightly more complex than the others I've made with 3 different brioche decreases and also an increase but once you're down with the technique it all becomes pretty simple.

So finally we have it, my briochey happy ending made all the sweeter by the false starts I had along the way.

Unlike the previous two clues, this clue arrived on a work day and I made the mistake of taking a quick peek it before I started working even though I knew I wouldn't be able to get started for hours. Also it was Monday when Cassie has choir after school so I had to wait until I'd finished work, picked Felicity up at 3:15 and then gone back for Cassie at 4:15 by which time I really should be starting the dinner and so on. This was a real bugger because this clue looked like fun to knit, and when I finally got going it really was!

The clue began and ended with a row of working a purl, yo, purl into 3 stitches which was a bit of a fiddle and took a while but I'm sure will look lovely and lacy once the finished shawl is blocked. The centre section consists of vertical stripes made from slipped stitches. This was worked by slipping every other stitch using the first colour and then sliding all the stitches back to other end of the needles and then knitting the slipped stitches with the other colour before finally turning the work. This was enjoyable to knit and looks lovely, I like how the stripes are subtle, as the yarns don't contrast too much, but still visible. It's a nice effect.

Since knitting Minimalismus and giving it to Stu I've had a bit of a bee in my bonnet about having my own two colour brioche hat and so once I'd finished the Boo Knits challenge last year I set about choosing a pattern. After a few happy minutes browsing I settled on Joshua Tree by Katrin Schubert Described in the pattern as a slouchy hat I figured that it had more chance of fitting the way I wanted it to than some of the other patterns.

I used DROPS Lima again, this time in dark purple for the background and pistachio for the leaves. I really enjoyed knitting this pattern, I learned a new brioche decrease and it was really fun seeing the leaves take shape as I knitted. This is definitely a pattern that looks way more intricate than it is and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. After finishing I tried it on and I was pleased to see that it did have the slouchiness that I was looking for and I really liked the way looked. I then admired the way the decreases met at the top for a few minutes before sewing on a furry pom pom just to finish the whole thing off.

The next day I wore it to go to a get together at my brother's inlaws even though it wasn't all that cold. Now this is where our tale really begins! I noticed as soon as I got outside though that the hat was actually a little bit large (I know, the irony here is not lost on me!) and the breeze could get in round the sides and around my ears, which wasn't going to be ideal once it got really cold. Once we arrived at the party I took my hat off and popped it inside the hood of my coat. When we left I didn't check that it was still there and I didn't notice that I didn't have it because, again, it wasn't cold. Honestly I didn't really think about it until a few days later when my Sister-in-Law sent me this picture and asked 'Is this yours?'

I said it was and she then said 'Well it's mine now!' quickly following up with a joke that she could never steal one of my hats because our heads are completely different sizes. Immediately I had a feeling that this hat was actually meant to be hers so I replied saying that the hat was a bit large for me and that if she liked it she could keep it. She did and she did..... and that is the story of why I don't have very many photos of this hat and how the search for my perfect brioche hat continued.
I found that I started to covet this hat shortly after casting on and wasn't entirely sure I wanted to give it away when I finished it, especially as I'd ended up giving away my Minimalismus hat! I decided that I would still offer it to Stu as I'd intended it to be for him though, even after I finished it and decided that I did completely love it. Luckily (for me at least) Stu declared it too slouchy for his tastes and the hat became mine. I'll admit that I failed to mention the fact that you can fold up the brim and convert it into a standard bobble hat but frankly it's his own fault for not working it out for himself! So long story short, I made me a hat that Stu has and I made Stu a hat that I have and now everyone has a hat they like and we all lived happily ever after.

In non knitting news, today is Felicity’s 5th birthday. I didn’t mean to leave it quite so long before revisiting the technigue but I've finally got there, this time giving two colour brioche a whirl.

The pattern I chose to start with was Minimalismus by Raina K. She has loads of lovely patterns but i chose this one because it has minimal patterning throughout the main body of the hat and also has an alternative version for if you don’t want to work the brioche decreases that form the tops of the arches around the brim.

I decided to go all in, and after a quick glance at a You Tube tutorial if found those big decreases pretty simple to work and I felt rather accomplished once I’d finished them all! The middle section was very quick to knit up and actually the hardest bit was making the bobble and I've now sworn off making the stupid things altogether, such a faff.

I wasn't entirely sure I was going to add a bobble to this hat but after I'd finished it and tried it on I found that it wasn't quite as slouchy as I like. I know it's silly but I have a really tiny head and I find that hats which are tight against my head make me feel like look weirdI look weird and a bit of slouch seem to fix that. I tried adding the bobble to see if I'd lie it better, but alas still made my head look derpy. So I asked Stu if he wanted it as he'd been hinting he needed a warmer hat and he's been wearing it ever since. Oh well, at least i get to someone wearing it even if it's not me. At some point I will revisit this pattern and add an inch or so onto the length and then it will be perfect.

Just quickly, while I'm here and it's not really worth a seperate post, I've completed Clue 1 of the Moving Forward MKAL, go no further if you do not wish to be spoiled!

So far it’s just white with a little texture.

I did have a bit of a silly moment where I misread the pattern and only repeated Chart 2 one and a half times instead of two and a half times but I realised my mistake when I saw other people posting photos in the MKAL Ravelry thread and startied to notice mine was a little small by comparison. We welcomed it without much (any) fanfare, New Years has never really been my favourite celebration but it is a nice excuse to make a few plans and think about what I'd like to achieve craftwise this year.

First up the Boo Knits 2019 Challenge. Once again I considered not signing up for this, this year's challenge will involve knitting 12 Boo patterns, but in the end I decided to go ahead but to not make it a priority to actually complete it. If I don't feel like knitting shawls I won't but I don't want to miss out onjoining in if I do actually end up knitting the required amount of Boo patterns throughout the year. This year the challenge is being kicked off by...

Moving Forward, the New Year Mystery Knitalong which I cast on for this morning so I'm already making a good start. This one requires 4 or 5 colours of fingering weight yarns that form a gradient. I'm using DROPS Baby Alpaca Silk, which I've used and loved for a shawl last year, in 5 shades from white to purple. I switched round the order of the shades a couple of times and I'm still slightly torn but at this point it's sheer guesswork what will work best so this is what I'm sticking with now.

My big important knitting project for the year is another baby blanket. Thanks to my sister my lovely collection of nieces and nephews is set to grow by one around May time this year so I will be quietly working away on a blanket for him/her. My sister has been known to frequent these parts (hi Jess!) so I won't be saying any more about this project until it's finished and handed over.

For sewing my main aim is to actually do some! I've been in a bit of a slump but I have several projects I really want to get done so I'll be making a special effort there. I really want to finally nail a pair of jeans that properly fit, I want to make another coat and I have a large number of dress patterns I want to try.

I also want to get more in the way of spinning done this year. Really I need to take a look at my setup and work out how to make it easier to just hop and and spin for a bit without having to drag everything out and then put it away again when I'm done. Basically I am lazy and I just wont bother if it feels like an effort and that is something I need to fix. I find I get so much more done if I can just snatch 10 minutes here and there rather than trying to find a whole chunk of time, but my equipment needs to be ready and waiting for me to do that.

And that's it. I don't like to put too much pressure on myself, but it's nice to have a vague plan for the things that I would really like to get done in a year. This way I don't dissappoint myself and hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised by what I do achieve by the end of the year.
Hanrahanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13998561131162202878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3646663724027743783.post-32925920920060643892018-12-31T15:14:00.000+00:002018-12-31T15:14:09.829+00:00Bo 2018: MojitoWow, it feels really good to get all caught up on this by the end of the year. I'll start by saying that I wasn't entirely sure that I was going to participate in the Boo 2018 challenge after completing the 2017 challenge, I mean how many shawls does one person need to knit really? But in the end I figured that I would still probably knit a fair few throughout the year and I would definitely be joining in any mystery knitalongs so why not go for it and be in for a chance of winning a prize. Because I won a prize last year I'm not hopeful at all of winning another this year but, hey, why not try! I've also finished 9 other projects this year, including a large a baby blanket so it's not like I've done nothing but knit lacy shawls and I'm happy to have taken part once again.

So, Mojito.
I took a bit of a gamble with this one, the yarn I chose is quite colourful and I wasn't entirely certain that the lace was going to complete with the yarn but I decided to go for it anyway and see what I ended up with. The yarn is Solstice Yarns Zorya Silk Lace in Unrequited Love and is very beautiful indeed.

I did feel that there was rather a lot going on here however and stuck with clear rainbow beads for a subtle sparkle rather than trying to pick a colour that would work. This was definitely a good choice.

Knitting this pattern was largely a simple affair. I like the all over lace on this one and the main body is relatively simple but there is a section with lace on both the knit and purl rows which does require a bit of extra attention but makes the lace extra detailed and lovely so it is definitely worth it. I'd happily knit this pattern again, probably in a solid colour to really show off the lace. While I do feel like I got away with using this yarn for this shawl I probably am hiding a little bit if the detail under all the colour.

As you can see in the photographs the lace shows loud and proud over a dark background but against a lighter colour it does disappear. This isn't a problem, just something for me to be mindful of when I'm putting an outfit together.
So before I go I will say a big Happy New Year to everyone. I hope 2018 has treated you well but if it hasn't I hope 2019 is much kinder. 2018 has been a year of change for us. Felicity started school full time which allowed me to stop working evenings and change to daytimes, this has been fantastic for us as a family and for me personally because I was just DONE with heading off to work as everyone else was finishing. I have had a little less time to myself as a result and perhaps less time for uninterrupted knitting and sewing but on balance we are all all better off now. Hopefully the coming year will bring lots of new adventures for all of us.Hanrahanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13998561131162202878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3646663724027743783.post-69586149586859865452018-12-30T14:38:00.002+00:002018-12-30T14:40:36.212+00:00Boo 2018: Diamond Fizz

Just one shawl to share with you today, one more tomorrow and then we are all caught up with my Boo Knits 2018 challenge - woop woop! Once that is out of the way then I can take a look at the year ahead and, believe me. I am deep in planning mode right now.
So for today I'm going to show off my Diamond Fizz which is one of the patterns from the Boos for Beginners collection. Obviously I am not a beginner but this is a really nice little collection with each pattern being a little more involved than the last and giving the more seasoned lace knitter the choice to kick back and knit something a little simpler. I've now knit two patterns from this collection, this one and a Mojito which I'll share tomorrow plus I have yarn and beads all ready for a Spritzer and I would love to knit a Southside in the very near future. Safe to say I like this collection!
The yarn is Dye For Yarn Tussah Silk Lace in Rain in a Graveyard, a lovely muted green that I like a lot. This yarn is a bit of a splurge but I've used it a few times now and it is a real treat, lovely to knit and really nice to wear.
The beads I chose to go with this yarn were size 6 Toho seed beads in Frosted Teal. I thought at first that they might be a bit dark but they're fine. They stand out a little without overwhelming the yarn so I'm happy with my choice.
The pattern itself was simple to knit, you have the option to go for all over lace or a stockinette body which is what I went for. I like the simple recurring lace followed by the much more intricate border, it's a beautiful effect. I think this pattern was a great choice for my special yarn and I'm really pleased with how this turned out. I also have a little yarn left which I hope to combine with some other leftovers in the future because it really is shame not to use up the whole skein of these beautiful yarns.
When Autumn rolled around I realised that I had been falling a little behind on my Boo Knits Challenge items and I did begin to worry that I might not complete all 11 items. I decided to take a look at my to do list to see if I could swap out some quicker to knit items. At that point I was mainly looking at lace weight beaded shawls and in all honesty that wasn't going to happen. Then I remembered Cloverfield, a Boo cowl pattern! I'd been on the fence about it because I wasn't entirely sure about the bobbly bits but I decided it would make a lovely gift even if I didn't love it.
I actually really liked the pink version on the pattern page so I chose a very similar shade to knit mone from. I used DROPS Nord held double as I've used it before as a substitute for aran weight and was pleased with the results. Knitting this pattern was a fairly simple affair but I will admit that I did not enjoy knitting the bobbles one single bit. They only account for 6 rows of the pattern and the rest is a breeze so it wasn't a total deal breaker, but boy those rows felt like they took an eternity.
Luckily I really like the finished item, it's cosy and a bit different to anything else I have. I'm not sure if I'd knit it again but I'm glad I made this one.
The quickest shawl I made last year was Dragonfly Wings, so I decided to bang out another one of those this year. It's a very simple pattern that results in a long shallow shawl and is a great option for a last minute Christmas gift.
I used some Fyberspates sparkle sock that was sent to me by a lovely Ravelry friend and was waiting for a special project to come along. The silver sparkles in this yarn add a lovely christmassy vibe to the deep green and blues. I have some left so I may have to make something sparkly for me too.
I enjoy knitting this pattern, it's half simple stockinette with occasional purl bump rows and half very simple beaded lace and it results in a shawl which is a very different shape to those I normally knit. It's also a nice pattern to showcase a somewhat variegated yarn. The one I made last year made use of some Tosh Sock that had also been sent to me and I was really pleased with how that one turned out too.
Even though these projects were picked to be quick I'm still really glad to have made them and I'm proud of the end results. The shawls that I was going to make have been postponed until next year when I will be able to take my time and enjoy knitting them, which really is the whole point of knitting them at all!

I do have a few left unblogged however and I would like to get to have them all shared by the end of the year as well. Some of the shawls I've made this year I have made before so I don't have much to say about them apart from sharing a few photos so I'll probably tack those ones on to the end of a post about a new to me pattern.
So lets go! First up today is Forever Yours which I actually completed in March and blogged about here when it was a WIP. It turns out I never posted about it when it was finished though.... oops.

I had to refresh my mind from the old blog post because I finished this one such a long time ago that I've mostly forgotten the details by now. I only have 50g of yarn to play with and I wanted to use as much of it as possible because I do like a larger shawl. Despite my concerns that this might come out a bit small I was really please with the finished size of this one. In fact I managed to do more repeats than I thought I would and I had to order extra beads before I could finish.

Looking at the photos of this shawl reminds me that I would definitely like to knit this one again, each of the sections is repeatable and you can make a different shawl each time depending on how many repeats of each section you do. Because I was concerned about yarn I did a smaller number of repeats of the earlier sections and then increased the repeats of later sections as it became clear I'd have enough yarn. I'd like to make this with a good amount of yarn so that I can plan how I'd like it to look rather than being led by yarn constraints. that being said I like the way this has turned out and it is a real statement piece.

The beads I chose were a lovely matte red, I decided to go for a textural contrast rather than a bold colour contrast and I think the effect is really lovely. All in all I feel like this is something quite special and I'm glad to have made it.

I made one of these last year for my Sister in Law in purple (it turns out I didn't blog that one so I'll include some photos of that one too I guess) and then found it really hard to actually give away! I used the same yarn for both, DROPS Baby Merino, this time in grey and I chose some frosted purple beads. The beads were actually a lot more muted than I had hoped and as I began adding them to the shawl I was slightly underwhelmed. But then I held my knitting up to the light and the sun caught on the beads and just made them glow. Unfortunately I've not managed to catch the effect on camera, but it really is something. Theres not much to say about this one, it was a simple knit and I enjoyed knitting it again. Again this is a pattern you can alter by doing different numbers of repeats but I just went by the pattern for both of mine and I'm happy with the size and the effect.
Continuing on with my little Boo Challenge catch up, my next finished shawl was Mustardseed. This was a project I started in April and ended up picking up and putting down in between other projects. I finally finished it in October after vowing to finish it before starting anything else.

If I'm honest I don't think that the yarn was really doing it for me, I had been hoping it would be more of a gentle fading between colours but ended up a little more stripy than I'd wanted. I used Knit Picks Chroma Fingering in Avalon, which I'd bought on a whim and thought might work for this pattern. It works ok but it's not entirely what I was after.

With the yarn having a few colours in it I chose simple transparent rainbow beads which I think was the right choice. They add sparkle without adding more colour to the mix.

This is a lovely pattern, nice and simple but with a little lace at the end. I would definitely like to make another with plainer yarn to really show off the pattern.

The more eagle eyed among you will notice that the edge on this shawl is a little different than the rest because I actually ran out of yarn. Super forward planning there Hannah! I had no intention of buying more yarn or ripping back so I just searched the stash until I found something in the right colour family and went for it. The yarn I ended up with is DROPS Alpaca, so a bit different texture wise to the Chroma which is a loosely spun single. It looks ok though and while this will never be my favourite knit shawl it is perfectly fine and I glad I gave this pattern a look because I will knit it again before too long.
It's been a while since I last shared a completed Boo knits project so it might seem like I'm very behind with this year's Boo Challenge, but I have been quietly knitting away and I now have 5 completed unblogged Boo projects. Life has been fairly hectic recently, I've changed and increased my hours at work, we've all had typical winter sicknesses and I seem to be constantly at kid's birthday parties! I'm going to try and get through the backlog over the next couple of weeks though because I have made some beautiful things and I can't wait to show them off.
This year's Boo Halloween Mystery knitalong was called Gothic Angel and one of the suggested yarns was Dye For Yarn's Tussah Silk Lace. Despite already having some in my stash I went to have a little look because I loooove their colours and ended up choosing a skein of the Dark Storm colourway. This is a very inky blue/black, slightly variegated but not obviously so which gives it a lovely colour shift effect.

I paired it with Toho Metallic Nebula beads which turned out to be perfect. I always find it hard to choose between contrasting beads which stand out from the yarn and complementary ones for a more subtle effect. I like how these match perfectly but provide little twinkles of colour when they catch the light.
This was a fairly intense knit, with patterning on both the knit and the purl sides plus different charts for the centre section. It was enjoyable though and I certainly felt like I'd achieved something once I'd cast off. The shawl is absolutely beautiful and well worth all of the work, I feel like my very special yarn was put to good use. I still have a fair bit left, I haven't weighed it yet but I should at least be able to use the rest in a two colour shawl, perhaps with the leftovers from last year's halloween MKAL.

All in all I don't have too much to say about another lacy beaded shawl except that it is beautiful and I love it! I'm particularly enamoured with the way the longer points in the centre sit when worn with the points at the front, it's very pleasing.
